Abstract:

The heightened emphasis on a healthy and sustainable lifestyle has led to a surge in the popularity of cycling and an increased interest in integrating emerging technologies into the cycling experience. Despite its promising potential and the advancements in leveraging Augmented Reality (AR) for cycling assistance, a significant gap exists in understanding cyclists' perspectives, preferences, and concerns regarding AR technology. This early research starts to explore the gap through in-depth interviews with eight cyclists, seeking to uncover potential benefits and challenges across six themes. These themes encompass addressing safety concerns, optimising navigation and training performance, facilitating biomechanical adjustments, and enhancing group cycling dynamics. We anticipate that the initial insights gained from these interviews will guide future researchers and practitioners interested in exploring the intersection of cycling and AR technology.

Title: Frontiers of Affective Computing: Challenges and Opportunities of Emotion Research in HCI
Abstract: In this seminar, we embark on a journey through the ever-evolving landscape of affective computing within Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Our exploration takes us deep into the challenges and opportunities that arise in emotion research in HCI, offering insights into how emotions influence user experiences and how technology shapes our emotional states in turn. I will guide you through examining these challenges and opportunities, focusing on the diverse methods employed to infer emotions effectively. With a particular focus on the indispensable role of context in understanding emotions, we will venture into the future, envisioning the pivotal role that emerging technologies are set to play in expanding the frontiers of our understanding of emotions.
Bio: Dr. Benjamin Tag is a Lecturer and Researcher in the Embodied Visualisation Group at Monash University, specialising in Human-Computer Interaction, Human-AI Interaction, and Affective Computing. His passion lies in integrating emerging technologies and cognitive psychology, allowing him to develop state-of-the-art methods for comprehensive, long-term mental state assessments in virtual and natural environments. His interdisciplinary and collaborative research approach aims to leverage innovative information presentation and visualisation techniques to offer users valuable insights and to facilitate sense-making, information processing, and overall well-being.
